Since amethyst is, by definition, the violet to purple hue of quartz, there is no such thing as truly green amethyst. The term "green amethyst" is just as apt as "red emerald" or "yellow ruby." Some varieties of gemstones are defined simply by their distinctive color.

Green amethyst, also called prasiolite, is a single-crystal variety of the large quartz family, which includes ametrine, rock crystal, rose quartz, and amethyst.

Its color ranges from very light, pale green to medium green.
