Pietersite is a trade term for a variety of the mineral chalcedony. It is native to Namibia and China, where it is mined for use as a decorative stone due to its chaotic chatoyancy and brecciated structure. Its colour varies from brownish-red to blue-grey and yellow shimmer. The Chinese variety is predominantly reddish-brown, with areas of blue and yellow shimmer. The Namibian variety is less varied, being predominantly blue-grey shimmer, with less common reddish-browns and yellows. First discovered in Namibia in 1962 and discovered in Xichuan – Henan Province of China – in 1966, it is often mistakenly described as a brecciated form of tiger's eye or hawk's eye, due to the brecciated texture containing chatoyant material. However, although they are similar mineralogically, pietersite is also not a brecciated form. Instead, the chatoyancy is due to a common mineral, crocodolite.
